Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a gorgeous cornflower blue, one of the most famous shades of blue in sapphire. The color shifts slightly to purple in incandescent lighting (second photo). The gem is 100 percent natural and untreated in any way. The gem was upcycled from a vintage piece of jewelry, and based on gemological evidence, it is from Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. It has very small inclusions that are quite difficult to see with the unaided eye from a normal viewing distance. The inclusions have been factored into the price, making this a great value for the size and color.
The sapphire was faceted outside the United States in a classic rectangle cushion design. It weighs 5.09 carats and measures 10.3 x 8.2 x 6.5 mm.
