Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a gorgeous violet-tinted blue, one of the finest shades of blue found in sapphires. The gem is 100% natural and untreated in any way. It was sourced directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has very small inclusions that are quite difficult to see with the unaided eye from a normal viewing distance. The inclusions have been factored into the price, making this a great value for the size and color.
The sapphire has been recut in the United States to improve the brilliance; it is faceted in a concave faceted rectangle design by award-winning artist Derek Katzenbach. It weighs 2.23 carats and measures 8.1 x 5.9 x 5.1 mm.
