Description
This heated Ceylon sapphire is a gorgeous shade of cornflower blue. It shows indications of heat treatment; heat treatment is permanent and stable and not only develops the color, but also improves the clarity. It was sourced directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe. There is also a slight haze to the gem from undissolved rutile silk, but it gives the gem a soft glow that is quite pleasing and enhances the color in low light.
The sapphire was faceted outside the United States in a classic radiant rectangle design. It weighs 2.17 carats and measures 7.2 x 6.3 x 5.0 mm.
