Description
This heated Ceylon sapphire is a beautiful rich cornflower blue–one of the most desirable hues for a sapphire. It shows indications of heat treatment; heat treatment is permanent and stable and not only develops the color, but also improves the clarity. This sapphire was acquired directly from a reputable gem dealer, and based on gemological evidence, we believe it is from Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe.
The sapphire has been recut in the United States to improve the brilliance; it is faceted in a classic brilliant oval design and cut to high precision. It weighs 1.79 carats and measures 7.5 x 6.3 x 4.7 mm.
