Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a lovely medium blue tinged with violet. The gem is 100% natural and untreated in any way. It was sourced directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe.
The sapphire has been recut in the United States to improve the brilliance; it is faceted in a concave faceted round design by award-winning artist Derek Katzenbach. It weighs 1.08 carats and measures 6.1 x 3.7 mm.
